The Oaks School is a small, intimate learning community. A strong community is a defining feature of the school. Oaks families and students actively work to strengthen the community through kindness, empathy, and inclusion.
Parents volunteer to the best of their ability and participate in all school activities. Active parent involvement provides a model for service and citizenship for our students and in the broader community.
All parents are members of The Oaks Parent Association (PA). The PA actively seeks volunteers for its programs and activities. Progressive Education Classroom and special subjects volunteers are also welcomed. For information about volunteer opportunities through the PA email Leslie Margolis, at PA@OaksSchool.org.
Each class has at least two parents who serve as Room Ambassadors for the year. Room ambassadors train in multicultural awareness and are champions of inclusivity in their class and the larger community. They work together with Oaks faculty and administration to address the various unique needs within each class in school development and planning. They also ensure that their fellow classroom parents are kept well informed of school events and their roles in them.
Assemblies & Café Friday
Each Friday during the school year The Oaks hosts an assembly. The goal is to gather together as the a community to share values, thoughts, ideas, songs, and reflections.
Each grade hosts three assemblies throughout the year, presenting what they have learned in class through creative performances. At the end of each assembly, two 6th graders share the Thought for The Week. After the assembly, students return to class while families congregate over homemade snacks and coffee in the courtyard at Café Friday. The Hospitality Committee sets up for the Café and provides coffee and tea. Parents of the class hosting that week’s assembly provide the food.
Many parents attend the assembly whether their child is part of the presenting class or not. Parents should stand in the back or along the walls and take care to not block the center aisle. Assemblies take place each Friday morning beginning at 8:45 am. If you arrive late, please use the back doors to enter the Chapel; the front doors will be closed.
