In the last edition of the Twig, I introduced Tanynya Hekymara. Tanyanya will be our new Director of Admissions and Civic engagement. You can read my introduction here. Since that time Tanyanya has been on campus and has attended an EISJ meeting, the Alumni panel and Buddy reunion and the new Kindergarten family mixer. She will be spending more time here over the last few weeks of school as she prepares to begin work in July.
What will her role be?
Tanynya will be overseeing our admissions activities. The goal is to broaden and diversify our applicant pool. She will also be supporting the school's equity, inclusion and social justice initiatives. As a trained and well known speaker and facilitator in the area of diversity and inclusion, she will be working with the faculty, parents and students to deepen our work with the multicultural process of change.
What is Civic Engagement?
In The Oaks Long Range Plan 2015-2020, there is a section called 'Citizenship.'
Here is what it says: 'The Oaks believes that the doorway to understanding the world at large begins with an awareness of and participation in the community that surrounds us. Our location in the heart of Hollywood affords us the unique opportunity to be part of a thriving and eclectic neighborhood.'
Some of our goals in this area are to expand our relationship with the surrounding communities by actively seeking opportunities or collaborative events. We are also looking to evolve an age appropriate curricular plan to increase service learning and learning exchanges with other organizations in the area. A part of Tanynya's role will be to work to get these efforts off the ground.
I am very excited to have Tanynya join The Oaks. I look forward to introducing you to her in the coming months. Please let me know if you have any questions.
